Same Difference

A new project gets more disabled people playing the beautiful game.

Inclusive United is a flagship partnership project which aims to get more disabled people playing football.

Funded by The FA and Wembley National Stadium Trust, Inclusive United has been going since 2012 and is a Co-operative of fourteen Professional Football clubs in London.

The team is part of wider scheme “London United”, which aims to get clubs working together to battle social issues that are affecting London, such as health, disability, crime, education and community cohesion.

During its first three years, Inclusive United plans to involve over 3000 disabled footballers, and looks to include anyone with any disability, be it physical or visual impairment, or learning disabilities.

the void

new-eraTenants on the New Era Estate in Hackney have been threatened with the ultimate revenge eviction by shadowy property developers and investment firm  Westbrook Partners.

The New Era estate has provided homes at affordable rents to local people since the 1930s – although current rents of around £600 a month are hardly cheap for someone on a low income.  When the properties were bought by Westbrook earlier in the year rents were immediately hiked by 10%.  Then residents were informed that the company planned to bring rents up to the same levels as the local private sector, where even small flats can fetch well over £2000 a month.

Alonside Westbrook in this nasty attempt at social cleansing were Benyon Estates who also bought a small stake in the estae.  This compant is owned by Tory Richard Benyon, believed to be the UK’s richest MP.  A series of bold and…

OCCUPY DEMOCRACY

Occupy London are calling out for evidence and witness statements from those who attended the #occupydemocracy protest in Parliament Square between the 17th and 26th October. Those of you who attended at some point will have been aware of the escalating police presence, the erection of fencing and a number of arrests that were made at different points throughout the week.

We would like to know:

  • Why you went to the #occupydemocracy protest.
  • When you first arrived. Did you return? If so, when?
  • What happened whilst you were there. Try to be as detailed as you can – referring to times if possible.
  • What you took from the time that you were there.
If you were arrested during…

Another piece worth reproducing from Vox Political. Mike in this piece, Is Iain Duncan Smith legalising breach of contract?, points out the further problems for working people with IDS’ plan to cut in-work benefits for part-time workers, who refuse the offer of further hours from their employer. It begins

Here’s something mentioned during Iain Duncan Smith’s session before the Commons Work and Pensions committee last week, that doesn’t seem to have enjoyed enough attention: It seems Daftie Duncan Smith wants to legalise breach of contract.

He reckons part-time workers should be sanctioned off their top-up benefits if they refuse extra hours offered by their employer.

The sanctions would apply under the Universal Credit system – which is never going to work anyway – so perhaps this is an inconsequential matter, but it is disturbing that the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions understands so little about contracts…

Aircraft-Carrier-Sky-600x400

The Pentagon’s main research arm wants to find out what a flying “aircraft carrier” carrying a fleet of small aerial drones might look like and how much it would cost the military.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency announced Sunday it would open a competition for proposals to build a large aircraft — similar to a C-130 — that could carry and distribute aerial drones across a large area. DARPA officials said they wanted to see proposals for a system that could both launch the drones, but also recover them mid-flight.
