When I was a shop steward in the 1970’s I remember our plant convener saying, and to some extent I agreed that a trades union should not be political, but strive to improve the wages and conditions of its members.
I did have some difficulty with this, as politics is often the cause of our struggle against injustice.
I now wholeheartedly believe that trades unions must be political, particularly in light of the enemy we now face.
Where the hell are they; hiding behind anti trades union legislation? Well, they should be reminded that we are lucky the Tolpuddle Martyrs didn’t say “Ooh! We can’t do that. It’s illegal.”
